Abbott Laboratories was formed in 1900 by Dr. Wallace C. Abbott. The company started out in Illinois, and was first called the Abbott Alkaloidal Company. Over the next two decades, the company expanded to include locations in Seattle, New York, and San Francisco as well as international locations in India and Canada. Throughout the 1900s, Abbot Laboratories produced a number of medical products including anesthetic, antibiotics, heart medicines and disease diagnosis kits. In 2010, Abbot acquired a number of other pharmaceutical-related companies, including Facet Biotech Technologies, Piramel Healthcare, Ltd. and STARLIMS technoligies.[2]

Abbott Laboratories offers several patient assistant programs through the Abbott Patient Assistance Foundation, which provides free Abbott medicines to qualifying patients. The organization also provides free medical nutritional products, including Ensure, Pediasure, Glucerna, ProViMin, Hi-Cal, Jevity and more.
