Abilify
From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Abilify is the brand name for the prescription atypical antipsychotic medication aripiprazole. Abilify is approved by the FDA to treat symptoms of certain severe psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia in adults and children 10 years of age and older.[1] There is some evidence that suggests that Abilify may be effective in the treatment of cocaine addiction.[2] Abilify also treats, alone or with other medications, mania or mixed episodes - symptoms of mania and depression that occur at the same time - in adults, teenagers, and children 10 years of age and older with bipolar disorder.[1]

Abilify Abuse
At least one study investigating Abilify as a possible treatment for amphetamine abuse discovered that Abilify actually increased the incidence of abuse and relapse. The study recommended a daily dose of Ritalin as an alternative treatment.[7] On the other hand, there is at least some evidence that suggests that Abilify may be effective in the treatment of cocaine addiction.[8]

About Abilify
Abilify, and similar drugs such as Seroquel that had previously been limited to the treatment of severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia, have also been approved to supplement antidepressants to treat depression when symptoms cannot be adequately controlled by the antidepressant alone. Abilify also treats children 6 to 17 years of age who have an autistic disorder. Aripiprazole may help control irritable behavior such as aggression, temper tantrums, and frequent mood changes in autistic children. It works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain.
