About Acid Reflux Disease
Acid reflux disease occurs when acid from the stomach moves up into the esophagus. This happens when the lower esophageal sphincter malfunctions, and instead of shutting immediately after food passes through it remains open and enables fluids to work their way upwards. Acid reflux is characterized by heartburn, and in some cases it can cause regurgitation into the mouth. Acid reflux is also called GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD can sometimes be a precursor to esophageal damage or even esophageal cancer.[7]
