Actonel is a brand name for risedronate, a bisphosphonate that slows the process of bone loss and increases bone mass.[1] Risedronate is prescribed to treat osteoporosis and Paget's disease of bone. It is also prescribed to those who are taking glucorticoids, which may cause osteoporosis.[2] Side effects of Actonel include stomach pain, upset stomach, muscle and joint pain, and heartburn.[1] Those with low blood calcium, kidney disease, vitamin D deficiency or an ulcer of the stomach or esophagus may need to consult a doctor before using Actonel.[1]

Common Actonel Side Effects
The most common side effects of Actonel include upset stomach, more frequent need to urinate, pain while urinating, cramping of the legs, headache, pain in the back or stomach, and more frequent burping.[2]
Serious side effects of Actonel include trouble swallowing, increased sensitivity to light, swollen or painful eyes, numbness in the jaw or the extremeties, swollen or painful gums, spasms in the muscles, heartburn, blistering and loosening of the teeth.[2]

Actonel Allergic Reactions
Actonel's active ingredient is risedronate, which might cause an allergic reaction in certain patients. Signs of an allergic reaction include hives, and in more rare cases allergies may be indicated by swelling in the facial areas. Inactive ingredients found in Actonel, such as crospovidone, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, may also cause an allergic reaction.[1]
Actonel Precautions and Warnings
- Actonel can create irritation in the gastrointestinal tract. This can result in esophageal erosion, ulcers or other conditions; sometimes bleeding, or occasionally stricture or perforation of the esophagus, can occur.[1]
- Patients taking Actonel are advised to allow 30 minutes to pass after administration before reclining or laying down. Failing to do so can increase the risk of gastrointestinal problems.[1]

Many other drugs may cause unintended interactions with Actonel. This includes:
