Adipex is a brand name for phentermine, an anorectic (appetite-suppressing) stimulant that affects the central nervous system. Adipex is a diet pill, prescribed to assist in weight loss for obese individuals with high blood pressure, cholesterol and/or diabetes. The drug is used in combination with a diet regimen that includes exercise and healthy eating.

Patients may experience side effects from Adipex, such as restlessness, insomnia, diarrhea, dry mouth, impotence and difficulty breathing. Those with high blood pressure, thyroid disorders or diabetes may need special tests or dosage adjustments. Adipex also has the potential to cause addiction, and is a controlled substance.[1]

Adipex Precautions and Warnings

  • Adipex may not be safe for use among patients with history of heart attack, chest pain, stroke, glaucoma, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe anxiety, or history of drug or alcohol abuse.[3]
  • Phentermine is closely related to amphetamine, and can be addictive. There is high potential for abuse, and patients may experience withdrawal symptoms like depression when they stop taking Adipex.[4]
  • Fluoxetine (Prozac), insulin, medicines for dieting and depression, paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as isocarboxazid (Marplan) and tranylcypromine (Parnate) may interact with Adipex.[1]

In addition, Adipex may appear in breast milk and cause adverse affects on nursing infants.[3]
  • Adipex may not be safe for use among adults over the age of 65 years. Older adults may have impaired kidney function, and might be more prone to dizziness or hypertension.[1]
  • Diabetic patients may need to increase insulin dosages while taking Adipex.[1]
  • Consuming alcoholic beverages can increase the severity of any side effects experienced with Adipex.[1]
  • Patients who suspect they may have overdosed on Adipex are urged to call Poison Control at 800-222-1222, or 911 in severe cases or if the patient loses consciousness.[1]
