Advair is a prescription medication that was developed by the drug company GlaxoSmithKinne and approved by the FDA in 2001. Advair is a combination medication that contains a type of inhaled nasal corticosteroid called Fluticasone and a long-lasting version of albuterol, known as Serevent or salmeterol - a long-acting beta agonist or LABA. Functionally, Advair is a type of bronchodilator. Bronchodilators widen the bronchial tubes or airways to the lungs. Physicians precsribe Advair to treat both asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. Advair functions by relaxing muscles and reducing inflammation in the airways, resulting in an improvement in breathing.[1] Some of the side effects of nasal steroids such as Advair include flu-like symptoms, extreme tiredness, increased susceptibility to infection, bone mineral loss, nervousness or anxiety, high blood pressure, muscle weakness, and vision problems.[2]

Advair Side Effects

Commonly experienced side effects of Advair include thrush in the mouth and throat - causing white patches on the tongue or the gums, hoarsensss, throat irritation, hoarseness, viral respiratory infections, muscle and bone pain. and voice changes, greater production of mucus or change in the color of the mucus, chills or fever, and increased coughing, and nausea.[7]

Some of the more serious side effects of Advair include

  • sudden problems with breathing right after taking Advair
  • higher blood pressure
  • rapid and uneven heartbeat
  • chest pains
  • tremors or uncontrollable movements
  • increased nervousness or anxiety
  • a reduction in adrenal gland functioning, with a potential loss of energy
  • blood changes, including glucose levels, potassium, and some kinds of white blood cells
  • a compromised immune system and increased risk of infections.
  • an aggravation of pre-existing infections, such as herpes infections of the eye, tuberculosis, bacterial, parasitic or fungal infections.
  • a decrease in bone mineral density, particularly in those with pre-existing osteoporosis.
  • problems with the eyes such as cataracts and glaucoma
  • an increased risk of contracting pneumonia[8] [6]

Advair Allergic Reactions

Some signs of a serious allergic reaction to Advair are: breathing problems, rash, swelling of the mouth, tonggue, or face, and hives.[9] Allergic reactions to Advair be caused by allergies to its active ingredients, fluticasone or salmeterol. Reactions can also be caused by or more of the inactive ingredients in Advair, particularly milk protein and lactose.[6]

Advair Precautions and Warnings

One of the active ingredients in the Advair Diskus is called a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist or LABA. In recent studies, this ingredient, salmeterol, was shown to increase the risk of asthma-related deaths. The study was a comparison of salmeterol and a placebo added to usual asthma therapy and revealed more related deaths in patients receiving the salmeterol vs, the place at 13 to 1.[6]
