Advair and Pregnancy
From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Advair Diskus is a prescription medical device that delivers a combination of two drugs: fluticasone and salmeterol.[1] The ingredients in Advair treat the symptoms of asthma and COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. These symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.[2]
Advair comes in three strengths and is always packaged in a circular plastic device that measures the precise dosage for the patient to inhale. Patients inhale the controlled dose twice a day, about 12 hours apart, whether or not the patient is experiencing symptoms. After inhaling Advair, it is necessary to rinse the mouth without swallowing to avoid developing thrush. The possible effects of Advair use during pregnancy or breastfeeding have not been definitively determined. [1]

Advair and Pregnancy Category C
The ingredients in Advair, fluticasone and salmeterol, individually showed negative effects on rodent fetuses in separate laboratory studies. Both ingredients also increased the incidence of miscarriage. There have been no controlled human studies on Advair Diskus use in pregnancy, but the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, has classified the medication as Category C, meaning it should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus.[1]
About Drug Side Effects
Advair and Breastfeeding
Researchers have not studied the effects of Advair and its components on breastfeeding mothers and babies. While only a small amount of the drug is likely to pass from the mother to the child in breast milk, the FDA has not issued a definite statement about the safety of using Advair while breastfeeding.[3]
