About Advicor

Advicor was approved in 2001 by the FDA for lowering cholesterol in tandem with a diet that restricts saturated fats. Patients are instructed to try diet and exercise to manage cholesterol before using the drug, and then to continue while they are taking Advicor.[3]

There is no generic equivalent of Advicor on the market. Advicor tablets come in strengths ranging from 20mg of lovastatin with 500mg of Niaspan to 40mg of lovastatin with 1000mg of Niaspan.[1]

Advicor side effects include slight dizziness, headache, light rash, indigestion, pain in the stomach and cold-like symptoms.

Advicor Patient Assistance Programs and Coupons

There are several options for saving money on Advicor:

  • The Abbott Patient Assistance Foundation, financed by the company's Global Citizenship Initiative, offers free Advicor.[4] Eligible patients either have no insurance or no access to other drug savings programs. An online application can be faxed or mailed to Abbott and, if it is approved, a supply of Advicor will be sent to the prescribing doctor's office. Proof of income and Medicare/Medicaid coverage denial is required.[4]
  • Together Rx Access has a drug discount card that covers Advicor. In order to use the card, patients must meet income limits, which start at $45,000 a year for singles, and more for couples and families. Applicants must not have insurance that covers prescriptions, and cannot be eligible for Medicare. The Together Rx Access phone number is 800-444-4106, and patients can enroll online. The savings card can be taken to the pharmacy along with an Advicor prescription for redemption.[5]
  • The Partnership for Prescription Assistance is an umbrella organization that offers a single point of access for hundreds of public and private programs offered by many manufacturers.[6] Sponsored by drug manufacturers, the Partnership provides information on programs for children as well as adults.[6] Their toll-free number, 888-4PPA-NOW, aids patients in English, Spanish, and 150 more languages.[6]
