How to Take Advil

  • For adults and children 12 years or older, Advil tablets and Liqui-gels are taken every four to six hours for as long as the pain remains. Advil is only a temporary remedy and does not treat the root cause of the pain. The makers of Advil advise that consumers only take as much of the drug as needed, and that no more than six pills should be taken in a 24-hour period.[4]
  • Advil PM combines the active ingredient in Advil, ibuprofen (200 mg), with a mild sleep inducer called diphenhydramine citrate (38 mg). This drug is meant to be taken at night to ease pains and allow for longer, deeper rest.[4]
  • Advil does not need to be taken along with food. However, if the drug causes any stomach issues it may help to do so.[4]
  • Patients who are taking any types of prescription or OTC drugs, as well as any herbal supplements or other nutritional products, are instructed to consult a health care expert to learn of any possible contraindications.[4]
  • Those who have been diagnosed with stomach ulcers are directed not to use Advil due to the possibility of serious bleeding.[4]
  • The manufacturer of Advil advises consumers to stop using any Advil product once the expiration date has passed.[4]
