Alavert Side Effects
From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Alavert is one of several brand names for the generic over-the-counter drug loratadine. Alavert is a non-drowsy allergy medication and antihistamine used to temporarily treat symptoms like itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, and runny nose. Antihistamines reduce the effects of a natural chemical in the body called histamine.[1]
The drug company Schering-Plough originally developed loratadine as Claritin, specifically as a non-drowsy alternative to traditional antihistamines such as Benadryl.[2] Loratadine was approved by the FDA as a prescription allergy medication in 1993.[2] Other brand names for loratadine include Agistam, Bactimicina Allergy, Clear-Atadine, Dimetapp ND, Loradamed, Tavist Non-Sedating, Wal-itin, and Wal-vert.[1]

About Drug Side Effects
Alavert Allergic Reactions
The vast majority of Alavert users will tolerate the drug without any allergic reaction. However, reactions are possible among those allergic to loratadine or other Alavert ingredients. Common signs of a severe allergic reaction are:
- hives
- difficult breathing
- swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.[4]
Alavert is made without any of the potential allergens nuts, eggs or gluten.[3]
Alavert Precautions and Warnings
Alavert is not intended for use among patients with hives who are also experiencing symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing; swelling in and around the mouth or the tongue; wheezing, drooling, dizziness, or loss of consciousness. These can be signs of a potentially fatal condition called anaphylaxis, which doctors typically treat with an epinephrine injector (EpiPen) rather than loratadine.[1]
The manufacturers of Alavert advise consumers with any history of kidney or liver disease to consult with a physician before using Alavert products.[3]
The makers of Alavert do not recommend that children under the age of six years use their products, or that children under 12 years use Alavert D-12, without consulting a physician first.[3]
