Aleve Background
Aleve is an OTC pain reliever manufactured by Bayer HealthCare. It belongs to the class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and operates using a form of the ingredient used in the prescription drug naprosyn.[8]
Naproxen, the active ingredient in Aleve, is used to relieve inflammation, pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness. Some of the conditions that cause pain and inflammation that are treated with Aleve include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, bursitis, tendonitis, gouty arthritis, menstrual pain, fever, headaches, muscle aches, arthritis, toothaches, and backaches.[9]
The manufacturer of Aleve claims that the product relieves pain all day long with a single dose, which is two tablets for adults. After the initial dose, one tablet may be taken every eight to 12 hours if necessary. The drug should not be used for a period of more than 10 days. Children under the age of 12 should not take Aleve.[10]
