Aranesp Side Effects

Aranesp is a brand name for darbepoetin alfa. Aranesp is a prescribed erythropoiesis-stimulating agent, or ESP, used to stimulate the production of red blood cells to treat anemia caused by kidney dialysis or cancer chemotherapy.[1] The drug is administered via injection. Side effects of Aranesp include cough, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, headache, nausea, mild skin rash and pain. Aranesp may increase chances of developing blood clots, heart problems and the progression of certain cancers in some patients.[2] [3]

Common Aranesp Side Effects
Common side effects of Aranesp include:[3] [1]
- swelling of arms and legs
- cough
- shortness of breath
- abdominal pain
- low blood pressure while on dialysis
- headache
- nausea
- mild skin rash
- bruising or swelling where the needle was injected.[3] [1]
Serious side effects of Aranesp include:[3] [1]
- chest pain
- sudden numbness or weakness
- severe headache
- confusion
- wheezing
- sunken eyes
- fever
- chills
- fainting
- high blood pressure
- seizures
Drug Side Effects
Aranesp Allergic Reactions
The active ingredient in Aranesp is darbepoetin alfa, which may cause allergic reactions in those who are susceptible. Aranesp has a number of inactive ingredients, such as polysorbate 80, sodium phosphate monobasic monohydrate, sodium phosphate dibasic anhydrous, and sodium chloride, that may cause allergic reactions.[4]
In rare cases, Aranesp has caused severe allergic reactions such as hives. In addition, Aranesp syringes are made with a latex-like material that may cause allergic reactions in those with latex allergies.[2]
Allergic reactions to Aranesp include:[1]
- rash
- shortness of breath
- wheezing
- dizziness
- fast pulse
- swelling around eyes and mouth
- fainting due to low blood pressure
Aranesp Precautions and Warnings
- Aranesp should not be used in place of emergency red blood cell transfusions in anemia.[1]>
- Aranesp can increase the chance of having heart problems and blood clots in certain patients like dialysis patients[1]
- Aranesp is classified by the FDA as pregnancy category C drug. It is not known whether the drug harms unborn children and it is unknown whether the drug is passed into breast milk for children being breastfed.[2]
- Aranesp is not recommended for use in certain cancer patients, including those who have a high chance of cure or those who are not due for anemia-causing chemotherapy for two or more months.[1] Studies have shown that cancer patients had a higher risk of death or worsened condition when taking Aranesp.[3]
