About Aricept
The main ingredient in Aricept is donepezil, which is categorized as a cholinesterase inhibitor. Aricept is the only cholinesterase inhibitor currently approved to treat all stages of Alzheimer’s disease.[3] It may improve a patient’s mental function and the ability to perform daily activities by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine, which is a chemical in the brain that affects learning and memory.[3]
Available in three strengths, patients begin treatment at a starting dose of 5 mg for 4-6 weeks. This dose, along with the 10 mg formulation, are approved for use in patients with mild to moderate dementia. Patients who have tolerated the 5 mg strength may increase to 10 mg if necessary. Aricept 23 mg is approved for use in patients with moderate to severe dementia. Patients who have taken Aricept 10 mg for at least three months may increase their dosage to 23 mg.[4]
Aricpet may cause side effects in some individuals. Common Aricept side effects include headache, problems sleeping, strange dreams, pain and stiffness in the joints, fatigue, behavior changes, and nausea. In some cases, patients may also experience serious side effects such as seizures, blood in the stools or vomit, pains in the chest, and pains in the lower back.[1]
