Aripiprazole, the active ingredient of Abilify, is an anti-psychotic that alters the actions of specific chemicals in the brain. The drug is prescribed to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Aripiprazole is also combined with other medications to treat major depressive disorder.
Side effects of aripiprazole include weight gain, nausea, headache, weakness, increased salivation, constipation and trouble swallowing. In some cases, it can cause more serious side effects like slow or irregular heartbeat, seizures, vision changes, confusion, and more. Patients taking this drug are more prone to dehydration and heat stroke. Aripiprazole is only approved by the FDA for adults and teens 13 years and older. [1] .

Common Aripiprazole Side Effects
Common side effects of aripiprazole include constipation, weight gain, anxiety, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, pain in the stomach, higher saliva production, joint, leg or arm pain and increased appetite.[1] [1]
Serious side effects of aripiprazole include raised temperature, uneven heartbeats, unintentional movement of body parts, seizures, loss of appetite, rash, changes in vision, muscles stiffness and confusion.[1]

Aripiprazole Allergic Reactions
Aripiprazole may cause allergic reactions in rare cases. Inactive ingredients contained in the pill or liquid solution can also activate allergies. Inactive ingredients in Abilify, the brand name for aripiprazole, include cornstarch, hydroxypropyl cellulose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose.[2] Severe allergic reactions to aripipazole may result in hives, dizziness, and swelling of the tongue, throat, and face.[3]
Aripiprazole Precautions and Warnings
- Aripiprazole may cause harm to unborn fetuses, and pregnant women are advised to weigh the risks of the drug against the risks of leaving their disorder untreated. In some cases, newborns have demonstrated shakiness, tiredness, excessive crying, trouble feeding and respiratory issues when the mother took aripiprazole during the final trimester of her pregnancy. However, schizophrenia may cause pregnant women to lead less healthy lifestyles, so in some cases treatment may be continued. Expectant mothers are advised not to stop taking aripiprazole before consulting their doctor.[3]
- Antidepressants, antifungals, antihistamines, fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), HIV protease inhibitors, drugs for seizures, ulcers, anxiety, mental illness, motion sickness, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, Parkinson's disease or urinary problems, sedatives, sleeping pills and tranquilizers may interact with aripiprazole.[1]
- Drinking alcohol while on aripiprazole can increase the drug's side effects.[1]
- Aripiprazole can impair thinking and reaction, making activities such a driving difficult to perform.[1]
- The liquid form of this drug can contain sugar, leading to potential complications for diabetics.
- Elderly patients are more prone to side effects from aripiprazole.[3]
- Elderly patients with dementia have a higher incidence of death while taking this drug, and it is not recommended for them.[1]
- Users can minimize dizziness by getting up slowly after laying down.[1]
- Aripiprazole can increase risk of heat stroke. This can be minimized by getting adequate fluid intake and abstaining from high-energy activities that cause perspiration.
