Atelvia
From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Atelvia is the brand name for risedronate sodium, which is prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. [1] Approved by the FDA in 1998, Atelvia belongs to a category of drugs called bisphosphonates and comes in a delayed-release tablet that is taken once a week.[2] Bisphosphonates are drugs that can help to maintain or increase bone density by slowing or stopping the natural process that dissolves bone tissue.[3] Bisphosphonates may prevent the development of osteoporosis. They can also slow the rate of bone thinning in patients who have already been diagnosed with osteoporosis and reduce the risk of broken bones.[3]
Potential Atelvia side effects include diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, upset stomach, back pain, and muscle or joint pain. [1]

Common Atelvia Side Effects
Atelvia was the subject of a one-year, double blind, multi-centered study as part of the drug’s FDA approval process. The following side effects were reported in more than 3 percent of patients in that study.[2]
- abdominal pain
- back pain
- bronchitis
- constipation
- diarrhea
- dizziness
- flu-like symptoms
- headache
- muscle/joint pain
- nausea
- upper respiratory tract infection
- upset stomach
- vomiting
A serious side effect called osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) has been reported in patients who take bisphosphonates, such as Atelvia. ONJ is a rare dental condition in which the gums recede away from the jaw, exposing the jaw bone and causing pain or numbness of the area.[4] Unusual hip fractures are another serious side effect that can occur in patients taking Atelvia. Patients should report any pain they experience in the hip, thigh, or groin area, as these symptoms could be an indication of a fracture.[5]
About Drug Side Effects
Atelvia Allergic Reactions
The use of Atelvia is contraindicated for patients with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to risedronate sodium or to any of the following inactive ingredients: Edetate disodium, ferric oxide yellow, magnesium stearate, methacrylic acid copolymer, polysorbate 80, silicified microcrystalline cellulose (ProSolv SMCC90), simethicone, sodium starch glycolate, stearic acid, talc, and triethyl citrate.[5]
Atelvia Precautions and Warnings
- Atelvia is contraindicated for patients with low blood calcium as it may decrease the calcium levels in the blood. Symptoms that might be associated with low blood calcium are numbness or tingling in the fingers, toes, or around the mouth, and spasms, twitches, or cramps in the muscles. [5]
- Atelvia is contraindicated for patients with severe renal impairment due to a lack of clinical experience. [5]
- Atelvia can cause severe irritation of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) mucosa. Caution is advised when prescribed to patients with a history of upper GI disease.[2]
- Atelvia is classified as FDA pregnancy category C, which means that animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus, yet there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans. In clinical trials, pups born to pregnant rats taking bisphosphonates suffered from bone issues such as incomplete ossification of the skull, and cleft palates. Infant mortality was also demonstrated in this study.[2]
- Evidence of lacteal transfer of Atelvia was demonstrated in animal studies, though it is unknown if Altevia is excreted in human milk.[2]
