About Avodart
The prostate gland, responsible for male sexual function and reproduction, may grow larger in some men aged 50 and older. Continued growth of the prostate may lead to a condition referred to as enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Avodart can help manage this growth.[4]
Avodart is classified as a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It blocks the production of the hormone that contributes to the continued growth of the prostate. Avodart works to reduce symptoms of BPH that may include frequent and difficult urination, as well as decreases the likelihood that surgery will be a necessary part of treatment.[5]
Avodart side effects commonly include problems developing or maintaining an erection, lowered sex drive, larger breasts that may hurt, and trouble ejaculating. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant are advised not to take or even to come into contact with Avodart, as the drug can cause genital defects in male babies.[6]

Avodart Patient Assistance Programs and Coupons
Several options exist for prescription savings on purchases of Avodart:
- GlaxoSmithKline (GSK for short), the maker of Avodart, offers the Avodart Savings Card to qualifying patients. Cardholders can present the card, along with their prescription, to their pharmacists and get up to $15 off of a 30-day supply or more. The savings card can be used for up to 12 prescriptions. The card may be used for mail orders, and if the mail-order pharmacy does not accept the card then patients may be reimbursed directly by the manufacturer. These savings are not available to those who receive public insurance benefits like Medicaid or Medicare. Puerto Rico and Massachusetts residents may not have prescription drug coverage of any kind.[7]
- GSK also offers savings programs for patients who cannot afford their medications. According to the GSK website, patient assistance provided aid to over 450,000 patients in 2010.[8]
- GSK also features patient assistance program information from external sources. These programs, while not offered by GSK themselves, can help cover some or all of the cost of an Avodart prescription as well as other medicines.[8]
