Benadryl contains the active ingredient diphenhydramine, which is used to treat symptoms of allergies and colds such as sneezing and irritated eyes. It may also be used as a sleep aid, as it causes drowsiness. Diphenhydramine is also sold in generic form, and is present in other brands such as Unisom and Advil PM.[1]

Coupons and discounts for Benadryl products are generally available on the Benadryl official site. Coupons may be offered for oral Benadryl as well as topical Benadryl products, and consumers may need to fill out a form to access them.[2] Coupons and discounts may also be found through other sources online or in printed form. Generic Benadryl may be the most cost effective option, whether coupons are available or not. Store brans of diphenhydramine, for example, cost less than the brand-name version.

About Benadryl

Benadryl is Johnson and Johnson's trademarked brand name for its diphenhydramine hydrochloride products. Benadryl, manufactured by Johnson and Johnson's McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit, is an antihistamine OTC medication used to prevent and treat allergic reactions. Benadryl is also available in prescription formulations that require a doctor's recommendation.[1]

Benadryl was developed by George Rieveschl, a chemical engineer at the University of Cinncinnati in the early 1940s. Benadryl was approved by the FDA in 1948. The original patent was held by Parke, Davis & Company, which had provided the resources for Rieveschel to test Benadryl.[5] The patent expired in 1964, allowing other manufacturers to produce drugs containing diphenhydramine. The FDA approved Benadryl for over the counter use in the 1980s.[6]

Side effects of Benadryl include dry nose and mouth, tiredness, constipation and upset stomach. In extreme but rare cases, the drug can cause vision impairment and painful or difficult urination.[1]
