Beyaz is a prescription birth control pill that combines folate with an oral contraceptive.[1] Beyaz raises folate levels to reduce the risk of a neural tube defect (NTD) when conception occurs while taking Beyaz or shortly after it is discontinued. The drug combines the hormone ingredients found in the birth control pill Yaz with Metafolin, a folate belonging to the group of B Vitamins that is predominantly found in leafy, dark green vegetables, citrus fruits and juices, and beans. The Centers for Disease Control recommends that women supplement their diet with a minimum of 400 mcg of folic acid daily.[2]

Common Beyaz Side Effects

The most common side effects of Beyaz experienced during clinical trials were headache/migraine, menstrual irregularities, nausea/vomiting, breast pain/tenderness, fatigue, irritability, decreased libido and mood changes.[1] Beyaz increases the risk of serious health conditions that include heart attack, stroke and blood clots. Hormones within Beyaz may additionally increase potassium to unsafe levels. Although anecdotal evidence links birth control pills to weight gain, research suggests that these types of drugs have little to no influence over weight. They can, however, cause fluid retention which may cause users to feel bloated.[4]

More serious side effects that may require medical attention include persistent leg pain, sudden shortness of breath, sudden blindness, severe chest pain, sudden severe unusual headache; weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, trouble speaking, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.[1]

About Folic Acid

Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate, a water-soluble B vitamin, known as B9, that is found naturally in dark leafy green vegetables. Folate helps produce and maintain new cells; it is used in the synthesis of both DNA and RNA. Pregnancy is a period of rapid cell growth, and it is essential for fetal health that the mother have an adequate supply of folate.[5]
