About Black Cohosh

Black cohosh is an herb that also goes by the names bugbane, Cimicifuga and rattle root. It is primarily used by women to help ease symptoms of hormonal imbalance, such as for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or menopause. It has been known to reduce hot flashes, vaginal dryness and irritability. Safety studies on black cohosh are limited, and this herb has not been heavily researched for effectiveness.[4]

In the past, black cohosh has been used to treat a variety of conditions other than hormonal imbalances. These have included anxiety, fever, and cough. The herb has also been applied topically to treat acne and other skin issues. It was once used as a bug repellent (hence the alternate name "bugbane"), and it was used by American pioneers as a treatment for rattlesnake bites.[3]
