Women who take Boniva are less likely to experience a break or fracture of the spine. Boniva works by increasing the amount of bone mass density and slowing bone loss. The prescription medication comes in the form of a tablet, and is only taken once per month.[1] Some serious side effects can occur with Boniva, including esophogeal problems, pain in the bones or muscles, low blood calcium and fractures of the thigh.[2]
