About Medication Side Effects
Boniva Allergic Reactions
Allergic reactions while taking Boniva are rare, but if one occurs, medical attention may be necessary. Those who are allergic to ibandronate sodium, the active ingredient in Boniva, may experience hives or other symptoms. Serious reactions include difficulty breathing, extreme dizziness, and itching or swelling of the face, throat or tongue.[3]
Boniva Precautions and Warnings
- Patients who have been diagnosed with severe kidney disease, have trouble with their esophagus, experience low blood calcium, have difficulty sitting or standing for at least 60 minutes, or are allergic to Boniva are advised by the manufacturer not take the medication.[2]
- Patients who accidentally skip a Boniva dose are advised not to take it later on. If a patient has taken more than their recommended dose of Boniva, they are instructed not to lay down or to induce vomit, but instead to contact a medical professional.
About Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis causes bones to become brittle, thus raising the likelihood of fractures in the back, wrists, hips or other parts of the body. Women are more likely to have this condition, but it does affect men too. Some of the risk factors for osteoporosis can not be controlled, such as genetics, ethnicity (it is more prevalent among Asians and whites) and medical conditions. However, it is possible to combat the disease by eating foods high in calcium, not smoking, keeping alcohol intake to a minimum and getting exercise.[5]
