Caltrate Background

Caltrate is a brand name of calcium carbonate, and is used to promote bone health. Caltrate supplements are also available with vitamin D, and come in tablets and chewable form. Varieties of Caltrate include:[1]

  • Caltrate 600
  • Caltrate 600+D
  • Caltrate 600+D Soft Chews
  • Caltrate Gummy Bites
  • Caltrate 600+D Plus Minerals
  • 600+D Plus Minerals Chewables

There are two main types of calcium supplements: calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. Caltrate contains the former, which is a more concentrated form. Consumers are able to consume fewer calcium pills, and in smaller sizes, to get the same quantity of calcium as they would with calcium citrate. However, those with reduced stomach acid (possibly caused by acid-reducing medicines) may not be able to absorb calcium carbonate as well as they can calcium citrate. In addition, only about 500 milligrams of calcium is actually absorbed by the body in a single dosage, no matter how much calcium the dose contains.[4]
