Celebrex is the brand name for celecoxib, a prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID, used to treat arthritis, arthritic pain and inflammation. The drug is used in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. Patients taking Celebrex are advised to tell their doctor about any other medications they are taking, including other NSAIDs. Common side effects caused by Celebrex may include headaches, dizziness, gas and upset stomach. Serious reactions such as ulcers and intestinal bleeding can also occur.[1]

Common Celebrex Side Effects

Common side effects that may be experienced when taking Celebrex include, but are not limited to dizziness, pain in the stomach, gas and upper respiratory infection.[4] More serious side effects that may require emergency medical help include:

  • Difficulty urinating
  • Cloudy or discolored urine
  • Jaundice
  • Palid hue
  • Signs of the flu

Celebrex is not for patients who have had coronary artery bypass graft surgery.[5]

Celebrex Allergic Reactions

Celebrix can cause severe allergies on the skin or internally. In some cases, these allergies can be life-threatening. Users are advised to seek immediate medical help if swelling in the facial area or the throat occurs, or if there are any problems with respiration. Patients who are allergic to celecoxib, other NSAIDs, aspirin, or drugs called sulfonamides are likely to experience reactions to Celebrex.[6]

Celebrex Precautions and Warnings

  • Patients taking low-dose aspirin for their heart may be at an increased risk for stomach bleeding and ulcers.[2]
  • Before taking Celebrex, patients are advised to tell their doctors if they are pregnant, have liver or kidney problems, have a history of ulcers or bleeding in the stomach or intestines, have high blood pressure, or are taking any other medications.[2]
  • Patients are instructed to take only as high a dosage as necessary, and to take Celebrex for as minimal a length of time as possible.[6]
  • Celebrex can cause fetal harm, particularly when taken in the early or later phases of pregnancy.[7]
