Citalopram is the active ingredient in the prescription drug Celexa. Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant that treats depression by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain. Side effects that may be experienced while taking citalopram include nausea, stomach pain, reduced desire for food, nervousness, change in sex drive and the ability to perform sexually, and uncontrollable shaking of extremities or other body parts.[1]

Common Citalopram Side Effects
Common side effects of citalopram include exhaustion, increased yawning, sleep problems, nervousness, decreased sex drive, cold symptoms, respiratory infection, uncontrollable shaking in different parts of the body and feelings of dizziness.[3] [1]
Serious side effects of citalopram include seizures, stiff muscles, fast or uneven heart beats, hallucinations, loss of coordination, and overactive reflexes. citralopram may cause thoughts of suicide in certain patients, especially those younger than 24 years old.[1]
Some additional side effects have been reported for teens and children. These include nose bleeds, menstrual periods that are heavier than usual, frequent urination, excessive thirst, and muscle agitation or unusual muscle movements. In addition, it is necessary to monitor growth in children and teens taking citalopram, as the drug may stunt growth or prevent changes in weight.[3]

Citalopram Allergic Reactions
Citalopram, the active ingredient in Celexa, may cause allergic reactions in some people. Celexa also contains inactive ingredients like copolyvidone, corn starch, crosscarmellose sodium, glycerin, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide and iron oxides in addition to the active citalopram, which may also cause allergic reactions.[3]
Citalopram Precautions and Warnings
- In August 2011, the FDA announced that doses of citalopram over 40 milligrams are no longer considered safe for patients. Taking doses at or above this level can alter the electrical activity in the heart, potential causing abnormal heart rhythm, which can be life-threatening.[1]
- Anticoagulants such as warfarin (Coumadin), other antidepressants like amitriptyline (Elavil) and clomipramine (Anafranil), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), medications for Parkinson's disease, anxiety, seizures, mental illness, medicine for migraine headaches such as almotriptan (Axert) and naratriptan (Amerge), sedatives, sleeping pills and tranquilizers may interact with citalopram.[1]
- Those taking MAO inhibitors are advised not take citalopram, as serious side effects may occur.[3]
- Citalopram can be dangerous to fetuses when the mother takes it in the later stages of her pregnancy. These babies may be born with health problems.[1]
