Clonidine is a generic alpha-agonist hypotensive agent primarily used to treat high blood pressure. Brand names include Catapres and Clorpres, a combination of chlorthalidone and clonidine hydrochloride. Clonidine may be used alone or with other cardiovascular drugs, and it works by lowering the heart rate and causing the blood vessels to relax.

Clonidine is available in tablets (Catapres, Dixarit), as a transdermal (skin) patch (Catapres-TTS), or as an injectable form to be given epidurally directly to the central nervous system. Kapvay is a brand of Clonidine that is used to treat ADHD. Side effects of clonodine include tiredness, headache, dryness in the mouth, sexual problems, constipation and upset stomach.[1]

Common Clonidine Side Effects

Some of clonidine's most common side effects are dry mouth, tiredness, low blood pressure, weakness, headache, nervousness, decreased sexual ability, nausea, vomiting, and constipation. More severe side effects can also occur. The following symptoms require immediate medical assistance: hoarseness of the throat, skin rash, hives, or swelling of the throat or face.[1]

Clonidine Allergic Reactions

An allergic reaction to clonidine may involve a rash anywhere on the body, hives, swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs, and difficulty swallowing or breathing. An allergic reaction may require immediate medical treatment. The inactive ingredients added to various formulations of clonidine can also cause allergic reactions. Some patients may experience a rash when using a clonidine transdermal patch, which may indicate an allergic reaction.[2]

Clonidine Precautions and Warnings

  • Clonidine may interact with other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products.[1]
  • Since exhaustion and dizziness are side effects of clonidine, the National Institutes of Health recommend that people taking clonidine avoid driving or operating dangerous equipment unless it is clear that the drug does not impair ability.[1]
  • Clonidine can increase the risk of fainting when rising to a standing position quickly. Therefore, patients are advised to stand up gradually after reclining. This side effect may subside with continued use.
  • Alcohol can intensify Clonidine's side effects, particularly drowsiness.[1]
  • Clonidine is not recommended for pregnant women in most situations. In addition, clonidine can be transferred to infants through breast milk.[2]
