Crestor (rosuvastatin) is a prescription medication that is designed to control cholesterol levels in the body. It is part of a larger group of drugs known as statins. Most of the cholesterol in the blood is made within the liver. Crestor works by inhibiting a particular enzyme in the liver that helps to make cholesterol. It helps to lower LDL (bad cholesterol) produced by the liver and raises HDL (good cholesterol). Statin drugs such as Crestor, along with a low fat diet, can also slow the progression of atherosclerosis, the gradual buildup of plaque in the arteries over time. Crestor lowers the amount of total cholesterol and triglycerides that ends up in the bloodstream. Crestor can lower LDL cholesterol up to 52% and raise amount of HDL cholesterol in the blood by up to 14%.[1] As with most medications, Crestor carries the risk of side effects; some as mild as heartburn, others as severe as kidney damage or unusual bruising or bleeding.[2]

Common Crestor Side Effects

The most common side effects of Crestor include headache, muscle pain, abdominal pain, weakness, and nausea. More severe side effects include muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness; lack of energy, fever, chest pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes, pain in the upper right part of the abdomen, extreme tiredness, unusual bleeding or bruising, loss of appetite, flu-like symptoms, sore throat, chills, or other signs of infection, rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs; hoarseness; and numbness or tingling in fingers or toes.[2]

Crestor can cause muscle problems; symptoms include unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially with fever. This could be a warning of a rare muscle problem that can potentially cause dangerous kidney problems. The risk is higher in people 65 or older, or who already have kidney or thyroid problems. The risk of muscle problems can be greater in those taking certain other medicines with Crestor. Crestor can also cause or exacerbate liver problems.[1]

Other potential side effects of Crestor may include cognitive impairment, including memory loss, confusion, and forgetfulness; and an increased risk of elevated blood sugar levels leading to Type 2 diabetes.[3]

Crestor Allergic Reactions

It is possible to have an allergy to rosuvastatin, or to any of the inactive ingredients contained in Crestor. The most common allergic reactions to Crestor are rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs; hoarseness; and numbness or tingling in the fingers or toes. Some of these reactions may require immediate medical assistance.[1]

Crestor Precautions and Warnings

  • In rare instances, Crestor causes a condition called rhabdomyolysis. It is the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. This is more likely to occur in older adults and in people who have kidney disease or an under-active thyroid.
  • It is possible that pregnant women who take Crestor will cause birth defects in their children. Doctors urge females of childbearing ability to use two forms of birth control while taking this drug. In addition, it is not clear whether or not Crestor is passed on to infants through breast milk. Therefore, there is a possibility that Crestor could harm breastfed babies.
  • Those who take Crestor and consume alcoholic beverages on a daily basis are at an increased risk of liver issues.
