Daytrana (methylphenidate transdermal system) is a medication approved to treat children between six and 17 with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is administered through a skin patch. Manufactured by Noven Therapeutics, Daytrana is meant to be used as part of a comprehensive therapy program that could include counseling or other therapeutic methods.[1]

Although many Daytrana side effects are similar to other types of ADHD medications, there are some differences due to the nontraditonal delivery method. For example, skin irritation is a common adverse reaction. Other side effects include loss of appetite, weight loss, mood swings, and insomnia.[1]

Daytrana is a stimulant, and is classified a Schedule II drug as it can cause dependency and may be abused. [2] Drug coupons are available for Daytrana that help minimize the cost of ADHD treatment.

Daytrona Allergic Reactions

An allergic skin rash is listed as a common side effect of the patch distribution system. The manufacturer advises that patients stop usage of the patch if bumps, blisters or swelling occur on or around the application site.[1]

Serious allergic reactions are uncommon with Daytrana. However, immediate medical attention is recommended if children experience a rash, swelling, trouble breathing, or extreme dizziness while taking the medication.[3]

Daytrana Precautions and Warnings

  • The ADHD patch can cause problems with weight and height growth. Therefore, it is recommended that children using Daytrana be routinely checked for normal development. Doctors will also typically temporarily discontinue usage throughout treatment to try to avoid any stunted growth.[3]
  • Daytrana can cause difficulties when taken by patients with certain medical conditions like cardiovascular diseases, Tourette's syndrome or other instances of uncontrolled muscle movements, glaucoma, mood disorders, psychosis, major anxiety disorders or agitation. *Children under the age of six years may be more prone to serious side effects with Daytrana.
  • This medicine is not recommended for pregnant females unless deemed absolutely necessary by a physician. The effects of breast-feeding on Daytrana are not yet known; however, it does pass into breast milk and may be transmitted to the child.[3]
  • Dayrana can cause users to become dizzy or have blurred vision. Therefore, driving is not recommended unless the full effects of Daytrana are known and it appears safe to do so.[3]
  • Daytrana can cause dangerous reactions with MAO inhibitors, and patients are instructed to wait at least 14 days before or after treatment to use these drugs.[3]
