Dexedrine is a prescription drug containing the active ingredient dextroamphetamine sulfate. It is a Schedule II federally-controlled substance used to treat narcolepsy and ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The drug is an amphetamine, and can cause potentially serious abuse and dependency issues as well as other significant side effects. Thus, it is not suggested for patients with a history of drug abuse, as well as some mental illnesses and heart conditions.

Side effects of Dexedrine include rapid heart rate, insomnia, headache, reduced appetite, insomnia, dizziness and upset stomach. Dexedrine is a stimulant that can impair reaction times and thinking abilities, so driving or operating heavy equipment should be avoided until the impacts of the drug are known.[1]

Common Dexedrine Side Effects

Commonly reported side effects of Dexedrine include tremors, dry mouth, weight loss, dizziness, decreased appetite, stomach upset, fast heartbeat, trouble sleeping, and headaches. Dexedrine can also hinder physical development in children, resulting in stunted growth. Children taking the drug are typically monitored for height and weight.[1]


More serious side effects of Dexedrine include heart problems, stroke, heart attacks, increased blood pressure, behavior problems, exacerbation of mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, and psychotic symptoms such as hearing voices.[1]

  • Dexedrine can cause premature birth and low birth weight when used during pregnancy. Pregnant women are advised not take the drug unless a doctor determines that the benefits outweigh the risks. Dexedrine will appear in the breast milk of nursing females, and may cause problems with nursing infants.[2]
