DextroStat is a brand of dextroamphetamine, and is used to control symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). DextroStat is also used to treat narcolepsy in adults and teenagers. When it comes to ADHD, DextroStat is rarely used as a stand-alone treatment; rather, it is just one tool in a therapeutic program.
DextroStat is an amphetamine and is in a class of medications called central nervous system (CNS) stimulants. It is a schedule II controlled substance and has the potential for abuse. DextroStat comes in tablet form, and comes in strengths of 5mg and 10mg. The drug is not recommended for patients who have issues with drug abuse.[1]

DextroStat Overview
DextroStat is an amphetamine that alters substances in the brain. The drug is used along with other treatments, like counseling and educational or social therapies, to treat the symptoms of ADHD. Children with ADHD may have more difficulty staying focused, controlling impulses, and remaining quiet than other children their age. Adults may be easily distracted or have unusual difficulty finishing projects.
DextroStat is also used to treat the symptoms of narcolepsy in adults and children. Narcolepsy can cause disrupted sleep cycles, daytime sleepiness, and sudden attacks of sleep. Narcolepsy is rare in children under the age of 12. DextroStat is not commonly used to treat excessive tiredness unrelated to narcolepsy.[2] [1]
DextroStat Abuse
DextroStat, like other amphetamines, has been extensively abused. Abuse can occur when patients take the drug without a prescription or in a way other than their doctor prescribed. Abusers may seek out Dextrostat for non-therapeutic uses, or use it longer than or at higher doses than necessary.
Chronic abuse may cause skin lesions, insomnia, irritability, hyperactivity, and personality changes. Withdrawal symptoms may include depression and extreme fatigue.[2] [1]
Overdose may require medical intervention. Symptoms of overdose may include:
- Dark red or brown urine
- Fast breathing
- Irregular heartbeat
- Confusion
- Depression
- Hallucinations
- Aggressive behavior
- Panic
- Blurred vision
- Upset stomach or vomiting
- Stomach cramps
- Diarrhea
- Seizures
- Coma[2]
DextroStat Side Effects
DextroStat may cause these and other common side effects:
- Restlessness
- Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Loss of appetite or weight loss
- Changes in sex drive or ability[2]
Some side effects of DextroStat can be serious and may require medical assistance. Some of these side effects are:
- Fast or pounding heartbeat
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Slow or difficult speech
- Seizures
- Mood changes
- Believing things that are not true
- Feeling unusually suspicious of others
- Hallucinations
- Frenzied or abnormally excited mood
- Aggressive or hostile behavior
- Abnormal movements or verbal tics

- Patients are advised not to suddenly stop using DexoStat without consulting a doctor, as withdrawal symptoms can occur. Typically, the dosage is gradually decreased to avoid risk.
- DextroStat can cause reactions with nutritional supplements like glutamic acid (L-glutamine) and vitamin C.
- DextroStat is not recommended for patients with glaucoma.
- Patients over the age of 65 are not typically good candidates for DextroStat.
- Fruit juices can interact with DextroStat.
- DextroStat can interact with numerous medications, including antidepressants, alpha blockers like Flomax, beta blockers, diuretics, blood pressure medications, seizure medications and more.[2]
Symptoms of a rare allergic reaction to DextroStat which may require immediate medical attention include:
- Hives
- Rash
- Itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat
- Chest discomfort or tightness
- Slowed or difficult breathing or difficulty swallowing[2]
