DextroStat (dextroamphetamine) is an amphetamine used to control symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. DextroStat is in a class of medications called central nervous system (CNS) stimulants. It is a Schedule II controlled substance and has the potential for abuse. [1]

Common side effects of DextroStat include restlessness, difficulty sleeping, unpleasant taste, diarrhea or constipation, loss of appetite and weight loss. Adult patients may also experience sexual adverse reactions like changes in sex drive or ability. More serious side effects may include fast or pounding heartbeat, chest pain, dizziness or faintness, seizures, mood changes, hallucinations, verbal or motor tics, or changes in vision. DextroStat may cause sudden death, especially in patients with heart defects or serious heart problems.[2]

About Drug Side Effects

A general overview of side effects that can occur with drugs like Dextrostat

DextroStat Allergic Reactions

Patients may be allergic to dextroamphetamine or to other, inactive ingredients in Dextrostat. A small percentage of the population is allergic to the ingredient FD&C Yellow No.5 (tartrazine); this allergy typically occurs among those who are also sensitive to aspirin.[1]

Symptoms of an allergic reaction to DextroStat which may require immediate medical attention include:

  • Hives

  • Itching or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat
  • Chest discomfort or tightness

DextroStat Precautions and Warnings

Amphetamines, including DextroStat, have been extensively abused. Chronic abuse may cause dependence, and users may suffer skin lesions, insomnia, irritability, hyperactivity, and personality changes. Withdrawal symptoms may include depression and extreme fatigue.[2] [1]

Patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) may be unable to take DextroStat for at least 14 days after stopping the MAOI. Patients taking alpha blockers, antidepressants, antihistamines, beta blockers, diuretics, high blood pressure medications, medications for seizures, chlorpromazine (Thorazine), haloperidol (Haldol), or lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith), among other medications, may need dosage adjustments.[2] [1]

Patients with glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, recent heart attack, irregular heartbeat, a heart defect, high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, or other heart problems may be unable to take DextroStat.

Patients with mental illness, facial, motor, or verbal tics or Tourette's syndrome may be unable to take DextroStat.[2] [1]

Dextrostat is a Pregnancy Category C drug, meaning that it has not been adequately studied among pregnant humans but has been shown to cause fetal harm among mice who were given about 41 times the maximum human dosage. While overdosing mice on a drug cannot accurately demonstrate how human fetuses will respond to a normal dosage, there is the possibility of risk when pregnant women use Dextrostat.[1]

Because amphetamines may be transferred through breast milk, Dextrostat is not indicated for nursing mother.[1]
