Diovan Information
Diovan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) that works by preventing blood vessels from narrowing, thereby improving blood flow and lowering blood pressure.[1] Diovan only contains the blood pressure medication valsartan, while Diovan HCT is a combination drug with valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic, or water pill, that reduces the blood volume, causing the body to release sodium and water through urination.[3]
Diovan is also used to treat congestive heart failure, which occurs when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to the rest of the body. It can also improve survival after a heart attack. Diovan is also sometimes used to treat kidney disease in people with diabetes and high blood pressure, or diabetic nephropathy.[4]
