Duetact is part of Takeda Pharmaceuticals' Actos family of prescription medications, which also includes Actos, ACTOplus Met and ACTOplus Met XR. Duetact is a 2-in-1 oral diabetes medication which combines Actos - pioglitazone hydrochloride - with a second drug called glimepiride, which is a sulfonylurea. Actos works by helping the body make better use of the insulin it produces. Duetact is prescribed to patients with type 2 diabetes, and works by improving the way the body utilizes the insulin that it already makes, as well as by allowing the pancreas to produce more insulin. Duetact is not recommended for use among patients with juvenile diabetes (referred to as type 1 diabetes) or those with diabetic ketoacidosis.[1]

Duetact Allergic Reactions

Fewer than one percent of patients who take Duetact experience an allergic reaction that creates eruptions or other issues of the skin. The allergy is caused by the glimepiride, and in some cases the symptoms subside on their own. When symptoms of allergic reaction do not go away, patients may need to stop using the drug and seek alternative treatment.[3]

Duetact Precautions and Warnings

Tadeka Pharmaceuticals advises that patients with heart failure should not consider duetact as a course of diabetes treatment.[1]

Duetact can increase patients' sensitivity to the sun's rays. Therefore, users are advised to stay out of sunlight when possible, and to cover the skin with clothing and/or sunblock. Duetact patients are also advised not to use artificial tanning beds or booths.[2]
