Ella is a brand name for ulipristal, a prescription emergency contraceptive like other drugs such as Yaz and Plan B. Ella is used to prevent pregnancy within 120 hours (5 days) of when birth control or a contraceptive failure occurs, or after unprotected sex takes place.[1] Side effects of Ella include headache, upset stomach, period-related pain, drowsiness, dizziness and pain in the stomach.[2] Ella may cause health issues in women who know or suspect they are already pregnant and women breastfeeding a child.[3]

Common Ella Side Effects

Common side effects of Ella include headache, feelings of dizziness, pain during menstrual period, pain in the stomach, drowsiness and nausea. Some women's periods may come earlier or later than usual after taking Ella. When menstruation is delayed for seven days or beyond, there may be a possibility of pregnancy.[3]

Serious side effects of Ella are less common, and can include severe lower abdominal pain which may occur three to five weeks after using Ella. Medical attention is recommended if this side effect occurs.[1]

Ella Allergic Reactions

Patients may have an allergic reaction to ulipristal, the active ingredient found in Ella. The inactive ingredients of Ella may also cause an allergic reaction; these ingredients include lactose monohydrate, povidone K-30, croscarmellose sodium and magnesium stearate.[4]

Serious allergies to the ingredients of Ella are highly uncommon. Should they occur, symptoms may include itching, rashy skin, dizzy feelings and swelling in the facial area or in other parts of the body.[5]


Ella Precautions and Warnings

  • Ella does not protect against the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), AIDS or any other sexually transmitted infections.[1]
  • Certain drugs and dietary supplements can cause interactions if taken with Ella. These include St. John's Wort; phenobarbital; rifampin; antifungal medications such as griseofulvin (Fulvicin-U/F) and itraconazole (Sporanox); drugs for seizures such as carbamazepine (Equetro, Tegretol); and barbituates.[3]
  • Ella is not meant to be used as an abortion pill, and is not prescribed to terminate pregnancies. Ella is not for use among women who are already pregnant.[3]
  • Severe abdominal cramps after Ella use may signify an ectopic, or tubal, pregnancy.[3]
