There are five diseases for which Enbrel is prescribed: rhuematoid arthritis (RA), plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), and ankylosing spondylitis (AS).[1] There are a number of common side effects associated with Enbrel, as well as some more serious adverse reactions that require immediate medical attention. Enbrel Allergic Reactions

Serious allergic reactions to Enbrel are possible, but not likely. The drug may not be recommended for those who are allergic to etanercept or any other similar medications. Pre-filled syringes are used to inject Enbrel, and these may induce reactions in patients who have latex allergies. In addition, anyone who has a latex allergy may experience a reaction if they inject the syringe into someone else.[3]

Signs of an allergic reaction to Enbrel can include facial swelling, swelling of the throat, problems with breathing or an outbreak of rashy skin.[6]

Enbrel Precautions and Warnings

  • Enbrel treats auto-immune diseases and it therefore affects the immune system. This may lead to serious infections (viral, fungal, or bacterial). These infections may include tuberculosis or hepatitis B, especially in patients who have previously been diagnosed with these diseases. Enbrel may also cause nervous system problems such as inflammation of the nerves of the eyes, seizures, and multiple sclerosis; blood problems; new or worsening heart failure; or auto-immune symptoms. Medical attention may be required immediately for patients who experience any of these or other serious side effects while taking Enbrel.[1] Enbrel may also increase cancer risk.[7]
  • There is a very slight risk of Enbrel causing blood count to drop to dangerously low levels. Signs of this include bruising, loss of color in the complexion or strange bleeding.[8]
  • Patients using Enbrel are advised not to receive any live vaccines while taking the drug.[8]
