The Exelon Patch was developed by the drug company Novartis and approved by the FDA in July 2007, as the first transdermal or skin patch specifically designed to treat dementia.[1] Novartis has a multi-tiered program called "Patient Assistance Now", which offers assistance to both patients and caregivers.[2]
Exelon is the brand name for the prescription anti-Alzheimers medication rivastigmine. The patch format makes administration easier for both patients and caregivers. Exelon Patch Information
The Exelon Patch is made for patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Patients or their caregivers apply the patch once a day. The patch format makes provides a much easier way for caregivers and patients to apply the drug than oral tablets. The patch then releases medication continuously for twenty-four hours to help with the patient's cognition.[6] The Exelon Patch also treats mild to moderate dementia in patients who have Parkinson's disease.[7] The dementia associated with Parkinson's disease is characterized by impaired executive functioning and problems with memory retrieval.
