Femara is a brand name for letrozole, a drug that lowers levels of estrogen in women. The drug is an aromatase inhibitor, like drugs such as Arimidex.[1] Femara is a prescription drug used to prevent cancerous breast tumors from growing (or reoccuring) in postmenopausal women.[2] The drug is often given to women who have been taking tamoxifen for five years. Side effects of Femara include weight loss, pain in extremities and joints, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, vaginal irritation, hot flashes, swelling in hands, ankles or feet and fatigue.[3]

Common Femara Side Effects
Common side effects of Femara include increased cholesterol, fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness, joint pain, vaginal irritiation, hot flushes, throwing up, headache, nausea, weight decrease, and pain in arms and legs.[2] [3]
Serious side effects of Femara include chest pain and difficulty breathing.[2] Rare side effects of Femara include blood clot, endometrial cancer and heart attack. Femara can decreases bone density, which may lead to bone fractures and osteoporosis.[3]

Femara Allergic Reactions
The active ingredient in Femara is letrozole, which may cause allergic reactions in certain individuals. Femara also has a number of inactive ingredients, such as colloidal silicon dioxide, ferric oxide, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, maize starch, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, sodium, starch glycolate, talc, and titanium dioxide that may cause allergic reactions.[5]
Femara Precautions and Warnings
- Femara may cause a loss of bone density.[4]
- Femara may increase blood cholesterol levels.[4]
- Some prescription and over-the-counter medications or supplements may interfere or interact with Femara. These include birth control pills, cancer medications, Evista and Nolvadex.[2]
- Femara is only intended for use among women who have already experienced menopause and will not become pregnant.[2]
- Femara can cause patients to become excessively drowsy, and can impair the ability to drive a motor vehicle safely.[4]
- Femara may not be recommended for patients with osteoporosis or liver issues.[4]
