Flomax is a prescription medication used to treat the symptoms of enlarged prostate, also called benign prostatic hyperplasia. Symptoms eased by Flomax can include difficulty urinating, the inability to fully empty the bladder, low urine flow, painful urination, increased frequency, and overwhelming need to "go." Flomax, which contains the active ingredient tamsulosin, is part of a category of drugs called alpha blockers. Flomax has the effect of relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder, allowing for easier urination. Flomax can cause a variety of side effects, some of which can be serious.[1]
