Approved by the FDA in 2006, FluLaval is an inactivated influenza virus vaccine designed for those ages 18 and older. Manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, the vaccine protects against influenza virus subtypes A and B. FluLaval was re-approved for the 2011/2012 flu season.[1]

The most common side effects associated with the FluLaval vaccine are reactions occurring at the injection point, and include redness, swelling, and pain. As with most flu shots, FluLaval FluLaval side effects do not occur with all patients, and are typically not severe. However, adverse reactions such as headache, tiredness, and aching may occur.[2]

Common FluLaval Side Effects

In clinical trials of people ages 18-64, the most common side effects from the FluLaval vaccine occurred at the point of injection, and included pain, swelling and redness. Other common side effects included headache, malaise, fatigue, fever, and myalgia.[2]

The FDA maintains that because the risk of major flu shot side effects is low, and the risks associated with the flu virus are high, most people should get flu shots like FluLaval.[1] However, there is a small possibility of severe side effects with FluLaval, such as altered behavior or high fever.[3]

FluLaval Allergic Reactions

Like other flu shots, FluLaval includes protein from chicken eggs as an inactive ingredient. Patients with egg allergies are likely to have a reaction. Although severe allergies to FluLaval are rare, they can be life-threatening in some situations. Patients who experience the following signs of allergic reaction are advised to seek help from a physician or other health professional:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Hoarse throat
  • Trouble breathing
  • Pale skin tone
  • Breakout of hives

FluLaval Precautions and Warnings

  • Patients who have gotten Guillain-Barré syndrome after previous flu shots (within six weeks of administration) may not be good candidates for FluLaval, and are advised to discuss the risks with their physicians.[2]
  • Those with suppressed immune systems, either from conditions like HIV or from drug therapy, might have a lowered immune response to FluLaval.[2]
