Fluarix Side Effects

From Pharmacy Drug Guide

Jump to: navigation, search

Fluarix is a "killed virus" vaccine used to immunize against seasonal flu virus subtypes A and B. The flu shot, which is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, is administered in the muscle of the upper arm.[1] Those who get the Fluarix flu vaccine for the 2011-2012 season can typically expect minimal side effects. In rare cases, there may be allergic reactions to the vaccine.

Because the Fluarix vaccine only contains dead virus, it is not possible to get the flu from taking it. Side effects are typically mild in nature, and can include irritation on or around the injection site, itching, fever, aches in the head or other areas of the body, and throat irritation.[2]

Common Fluarix Side Effects

Many people who receive the Fluarix vaccine will not experience any side effects at all, or else the side effects may be minimal. Experts generally agree that the risks associated with contracting the influenza virus are typically greater than the vaccine's side effects, as the flu causes multiple deaths each year. Influenza can lead to pneumonia, exacerbate other illnesses and even cause seizures in children. Therefore, experts recommend that all people over the age of six months get a flu shot.

The most common adverse reactions to Fluarix include:[2]

  • Headaches
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Pain, soreness, redness and swelling near the point where the shot was administered

Fluarix Allergic Reactions

Although not common, allergic reactions may occur in some people after receiving the Fluarix vaccine. In rare cases of severe reactions, patients may experience the following symptoms within several minutes to several hours of receiving the vaccine:[2]

  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Dizziness
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Hives
  • Pale skin

Those experiencing these reactions are advised to contact their doctor or healthcare provider.

Anyone allergic to chicken eggs or diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome should not get a Fluarix vaccine. Similarly, anyone who has previously demonstrated severe allergies to Fluarix or any other type of flu shot is advised not to take it.[2]

Fluarix Precautions and Warnings

  • Younger children who take Fluarix and the pneumococcal vaccine in the same session may be more susceptible to seizures.[2]
  • Older flu vaccines (from 1976) were linked to an increased risk of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). It is not clear whether Fluarix or other modern flu vaccines come with this risk. However, it is possible that one or two out of every million flu-shot patients may develop GBS. This is thought to be much lower than the risks associated with contracting the flu virus.[2]
