Fluoxetine is a drug used as a treatment for depression. The prescription medication is found in brands such as Prozac and Rapiflux. It is classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, a type of antidepressant. Fluoxetine is prescribed to treat depressive disorder, bulumia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder and panic disorder.[1] The drug affects chemicals in the brain that might otherwise become unbalanced. The side effects of fluoxetine include nervousness, nausea, loss of appetite, excessive sweating, changes in sexual behavior, uncontrollable shaking of different parts of the body and sore throat.[2]

Common Fluoxetine Side Effects
Common side effects of fluoxetine include nervousness, strange dreams, perspiration, hot flashes, rash, tremors, drowsiness, changes in sex drive, changes in sleeping habits, dry mouth, mild nausea, and lack of appetite.[4] [2]
Serious side effects of fluoxetine include skin rash, stiff muscles, high temperature, hallucinations, weakness, hives, sore throat and seizures.[2]

Fluoxetine Allergic Reactions
It is unusual for patients to experience any allergic reactions due to fluoxetine. However, it is possible to experience severe allergies with symptoms that require immediate medical treatment. Such symptoms include skin rash, dizziness, swollen face, swollen throat and impaired breathing. Those who are not allergic to fluoxetine may still be allergic to active ingredients present in medicines that contain this drug.[5]
Fluoxetine Precautions and Warnings
- Fluoxetine may cause suicidal thoughts and tendencies in children, teenagers and young adults.[2]
- Drinking alcohol while on fluoxetine may increase its side effects. The drug may impair thinking and the ability to react.[3]
- Antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil) and nortriptyline (Aventyl, Pamelor), anticogulants like warfarin (Coumadin), and medications for mental illness like clozapine (Clozaril) and haloperidol (Haldol) may interact with fluoxetine.[2]
- Women who are pregnant, or who are planning to conceive a child, are advised not to consume fluoxetine. The drug has been shown to injure the fetus, especially when the mother uses in the later stages of pregnancy. Fluoxetine is also not recommended for nursing females.[3]
