Focalin is the brand name for stimulant ADHD medication dexmethylphenidate. This Schedule II controlled substance is FDA-approved for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in patients ages six and up. Common Focalin Side Effects
Frequent side effects of Focalin XR usage include nausea, anxiety, dryness of the mouth, nervousness, headache, insomnia, reduced desire for food, and dizziness. Focalin may cause other side effects when mixed with other medications. Serious but rare side effects of Focalin include seizures, weakness or numbness, paranoia, hallucinations, purple skin blotches, blurred vision, and other eyesight changes.[1]
Focalin Allergic Reactions
Allergic reactions to Focalin are considered rare. Shortness of breath, heart problems, dizziness, rash, or swelling are signs to seek medical attention immediately.[3]
Patients who are allergic to methylphenidate, found in Ritalin, Methylin, Concerta, and Metadate, are at risk for allergic reactions to Focalin. Also, those who are not allergic to the active ingredient in Focalin may still have adverse reactions to inactive ingredients in the drug.
Focalin Precautions and Warnings
- Some children on Focalin may have signs of slowed growth, so routine height and weight checks are recommended.[1]
- Focalin may cause problems among patients who have cardiovascular issues such as irregular heartbeat or coronary artery disease; muscle tics or Tourette's syndrome; glaucoma; or psychological issues such as high anxiety or psychosis.[1]
- Because Focalin may cause patients to feel dizzy or affect their vision, users are advised to abstain from operating a car or other heavy machinery until the full extent of the side effects are known.[3]
- Focalin is not recommended for childbearing females except in special circumstances, and there is a possibility that the drug may be passed on to infants via breastfeeding.[3]
- Patients who are scheduled to undergo surgery are advised to inform their surgeon or dentist that they are taking Focalin.[1]
- Patients over the age of 60 are at risk of developing insomnia, anorexia, and cardiovascular problems like high blood pressure with Focalin use.[3]
- Focalin is not approved for children under the age of six.[3]
- Focalin XR will start to take effect more rapidly if taken on an empty stomach.[1]
- Patients are advised to consume Focalin pills whole, and not to crush them or chew them.[1]
