Geodon, the brand name for the prescription medication ziprasidone, is an antipsychotic medication that works by altering the effects of chemicals in the brain. Ziprasidone is classified as an atypical antipsychotic, which include drugs such as Zyprexa and Abilify. Geodon is used to manage manic episodes among patients with bipolar disorder, as well as schizophrenia.[1] As with most medications, Geodon carries the risk of side effects, some of them potentially dangerous. Some of the more common side effects of Geodon are tiredness, muscle shaking, bowel issues (diarrhea or constipation), stomach upset and cold-like symptoms.[2]

Common Geodon Side Effects
Some patients may experience unpleasant side effects while using this medication, such as upset stomach, drowsiness, bowel issues, muscle tremors or other involuntary movements, restlessness, runny nose, cough or rash. A low percentage of patients taking Geodon will gain weight during treatment.[2] More serious side effects include: dizziness, feeling light-headed, fainting, fast, pounding or uneven heartbeat; stiff muscles, confusion, perspiration, high temperature, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, restless muscle movements in the eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck, increased thirst or urination, weakness, extreme hunger, or penis erection that hurts and persists four hours or longer.[3]

Patients who have previously demonstrated allergic sensitivity to ziprasidone, the active ingredient in this drug, will likely have allergic reactions from Geodon. In addition, Geodon contains a number if other, inactive ingredients that users may react to. While serious allergic reactions rarely occur, they have the potential to be highly dangerous in some situations.[4] Inactive ingredients found in Geodon, such as lactose, starch, corn and magnesium stearate may also cause adverse reactions.[5]

- Geodon has been shown to raise blood sugar levels and cause hyperglycemia in some patients, even those without diabetes. Schizophrenics are already more likely than others to develop diabetes, and those who take Geodon may have an even greater risk.[3]
- In a very small number of cases, Geodon can result in a dangerous condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (or NMS). This condition can be life-threatening, and symptoms include shaking, high temperature, muscle stiffness and changes in blood pressure and heart rate.[2]
- There is a possibility that Geodon can cause a drop in white blood cell levels. This can be highly dangerous.[2]
