About Gilenya

Gilenya is a brand name for fingolimod, a drug used to treat relapses of multiple sclerosis. Gilenya comes in pill form, and is taken once per day. No injections are needed, and while Gilenya is not a cure for MS it can help decrease the physical issues associated with the disease.

Gilenya works by reducing the amount of a white blood cell called lymphocyte in the blood stream. It is theorized that the drug keeps these cells contained in the lymph nodes so that there is less incidence of lymphocytes attacking nerve fibers. As a result, physical symptoms of MS are reduced. Gilenya may reduce heart rate during the beginning of treatment.[7]
