Consumers can find impressive savings on glucosamine. Glucosamine is an OTC supplement used to alleviate pain of osteoarthritis and to improve joint flexibility.[1] Glucosamine is a substance found naturally in healthy cartilage, and randomized studies suggest that the drug may play a role in alleviating some osteoarthritis symptoms, especially in the knee.[1] The FDA reports that the connection has not been proven through adequate human studies to recommend this treatment.[2] Glucosamine is usually taken in combination with chondroitin sulfate.[2]

About Glucosamine

Glucosamine studies have been inconsistent in attempts to determine whether the supplement will treat osteoarthritis effectively. Some results, however, have been promising enough that experts make recommendations regarding its use:[3][1]

  • Glucosamine may reduce pain in osteoarthritis, especially of the knee or hip.
  • Some forms of glucosamine may be helpful in treating irritable bowel disease.
  • Injected glucosamine and chondroitin may help treat some leg pain.
  • Glucosamine given to athletes with knee injuries in rehabilitation seemed to improve joint flexibility.
  • Early research results suggest glucosamine may help rheumatoid arthritis patients with joint pain and swelling

In all cases, further study is necessary.[2]

Glucosamine Warnings

When used as directed, glucosamine is rated as "likely safe" by the National Library of Medicine.[4] Side effects are usually mild, including nausea, heartburn, diarrhea, constipation. Less common are drowsiness, headache, and skin reactions.[4] The safety of glucosamine in pregnancy and breastfeeding mothers has not been studied well, so experts advise against its use in those circumstances.[4] Some glucosamine is made from the shells of lobsters, crabs, and other shellfish. This could raise a concern for those with shellfish allergies, but the latter are commonly caused by the meat of the fish, not the shells, and there have been no reports of glucosamine triggering these allergies.[5] Specialists advise against taking glucosamine with warfarin, or Coumadin, because blood clotting may be slowed to the point of serious bruising and bleeding.[6]
