Herceptin, a monoclonal antibody developed by Genentech, treats HER2+ breast and stomach cancer. Treatment with Herception costs about $60,000 per year.[1] Since Herceptin is frequently prescribed in combination with other cancer drugs, treatment can quickly become prohibitively expensive for some patients. Genentech's Herceptin Access Solutions Program provides patients with information about coupons, vouchers, patient assistance programs, and other financial support for patients taking Herceptin.[2]

About Herceptin

HER2+ breast cancer cells have more HER2 receptors than normal breast cells. This causes the cancer cells to grow and divide faster, creating more HER2+ cancer cells.[3] Herceptin is an HER2 antibody that lengthens remission time in metastatic breast cancer, and is part of a class of drugs known as monoclonal antibodies. Over 450,000 women have been treated with Herceptin since the drug was initially approved in 1998.[4]

Herceptin Patient Assistance Programs and Coupons

Genentech offers two patient assistance programs that provide financial support for Herceptin treatment.

  • The Genetech Access to Care program can help uninsured patients who meet certain income eligibility criteria pay for treatment. Patients with insurance, whose insurers have denied coverage for Herceptin, may also be eligible for the Access to Care program.
  • Genetech's BioOncology Co-pay program can help eligible patients who have insurance, but who can't afford the co-pays charged for Herceptin. The Co-pay programs provides support for 80% of a patient's co-pay, up to $4,000 a year for patients who earn less than $100,000 a year. Patients with incomes over $100,000 are still eligible, but the program will only cover $15,00 a year in costs.[2] Residents of Vermont and Massachusetts are not eligible for the BioOncology Co-pay program.[5]

Information about both programs, as well as other third-party programs that may be able to provide assistance, is available from Herception Access Solutions at 888-249-4918.[2]
