Humira Side Effects
From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Humira is a brand name for adalimumab, a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor. Humira is administered by injection. The TNF blocker is prescribed to treat psoriatic, rheumatoid and juvenile idiopathic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and plaque psoriasis. Humira is also prescribed to those who tried to treat Crohn's disease with other drugs and were unsuccessful.
Side effects of Humira include irritation at the site of injection, which may include itching, bruising and swelling, as well as stomach upset or pain and other aches. Humira can reduce the body's ability to fight off disease, making patients more vulnerable to infections like influenza.[1]

Humira Allergic Reactions
Patients who are allergic to latex or rubber may experience reactions to the Humira pre-filled syringe. In addition, those who are allergic to injectable adalimumab or mannitol may react to Humira.[1]
There are also inactive ingredients in the Humira formula that can trigger allergic responses, like sodium chloride, monobasic sodium phosphate dihydrate, dibasic sodium phosphate dihydrate, sodium citrate, citric acid monohydrate, mannitol and polysorbate 80.[2]
Humira Precautions and Warnings
- Humira affects the immune system, and may decrease a patient's ability to fight infections, making them more prone to fungal, viral or bacterial infections. Humira users are more likely to contract serious illnesses that may spread through the body and, in some cases, prove fatal. Patients who exhibit signs of serious infection, such as sweating, sore throat, weight loss, fatigue, fever, weakness or pain while urinating, are directed to consult a physician at once.[1]
- Humira is not safe for children who have not gotten all of their required shots and vaccinations.[1]
- Children, teenagers and young adults taking Humira may increase their chances of developing lymphoma and other types of cancers.[2]
- Parents of Humira patients are advised to watch for swollen lymph nodes, easy bruising, high temperature and unexplained weight loss in the children. These may be signs of lymphoma and are to be reported to a doctor immediately.[1]
- The FDA classifies Humira under pregnancy category B. Animal testing has shown that Humira does not present any risk to the fetus. However, the medicine cannot be deemed safe for pregnant humans until more research on people has been conducted, as animal studies cannot accurately predict how a drug will affect human beings.[2]
- Humira patients are instructed not to receive any live vaccines while on the drug. Other kinds of vaccines may be taken.[3]
- Humira may not be right for patients who have histories of multiple sclerosis or other nervous system disorders.[2]
