Kapvay, a brand of clonidine, is used primarily in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Physicians have prescribed clonodine to treat high blood pressure since the 1950s. The FDA approved Kapvay to treat ADHD in 2010.
Kapvay, in part because of its effect on blood pressure, may produce side effects. Common adverse reactions to Kapvay include tiredness, insomnia, dizziness, upper respiratory tract infections, nightmares, and altered mood.[1]
Kapvay (clonidine hydrochloride) extended-release tablets may be used in addition to a stimulant as part of a an ADHD treatment plan. Kapvay is for children and adults, and the majority of Kapvay patients have shown improvement within the first five weeks.[1]

Common Kapvay Side Effects
The most common side effects of Kapvay ADHD medicition are sleepiness, increased body temperature, tiredness, and upper respiratory tract infection (including cough, runny nose, and sneezing), sore throat, sleep disturbances, nightmares, mood changes, constipation, stuffy nose, dry mouth, and ear pain.[1]
More serious Kapvay side effects include passing out, slow heart rate, irritability, and depression. Patients who experience these symptoms are advised to consult a medical professional.[2]

Kapvay Allergic Reactions
Patients who have had previous allergic reactions using the clonodine transdermal patch may experience a rash or skin irritation using Kapvay. Other potential allergic reactions to Kapvay may involve hives; swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, or other areas of the face; and difficulty swallowing or breathing. Allergic reactions may require immediate medical treatment.[2]
Kapvay Precautions and Warnings
- Drinking alcohol or taking sedatives while using Kapvay can increase side effects of drowsiness or dizziness.[1]
- Patients are advised not to operate a motor vehicle or partake in any potentially dangerous activities that require concentration while using Kapvay.[1]
- Kapvay may not be right for patients with certain medical conditions, such as coronary artery disease, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure (hypotension), stroke, or kidney disease.[2]
- Because Kapvay can cause the eyes to dry out, contact lens wearers might need to use moisturizing eye drops.[2]
- Patients using Xanax, Valium, or other anti-anxiety medications are advised to discuss interactions with their doctor or pharmacist.[2]
