Lantus® is a long-acting insulin glargine marketed by Sanofi that is used to help control the blood sugar levels of patients with diabetes. It may be prescribed for patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes who are over the age of 6. Unlike traditional insulin injections, Lantus® lasts from 18 to 26 hours, making it an alternative to an insulin pump.[1]

Lantus® savings are available in the form of a Lantus patient assistance program, as well as coupons that can be applied towards refills for the Lantus® Solostar Pen. Health discount plans can also help defray the cost of Lantus®.

Lantus Patient Assistance Programs and Coupons

Coupons are available for the Lantus® Solostar Pen that offer a $25 savings on the co-pay for the first prescription. One Lantus® Solostar Pen prescription provides up to 500 units more insulin than the average Lantus® vial. The Solostar Pen is available for the same copay as the Lantus vial under most managed care plans. The Slostar coupon may not be used by patients who have public medication assistance, such as Medicare, Medicaid or other state and federal insurance programs. The coupon is not valid for refills.[7]

Sanofi offers a patient assistance programs (PAPs) to help those who cannot afford to purchase Lantus®. The program, provided by the company's Sanofi Patient Connection Program, covers both the Lanuts® Solostar Pen and Lantus® U-100 injections. To be eligible, the patient's income must not exceed 250 percent of the national poverty level, which changes each year. The patient may not have prescription drug coverage that covers some or all of the cost of Lantus®, and they may not be eligible to receive Medicare assistance from the government.[8]

To apply for the Sanofi PAP, patients can download the application from the program website or call 888-847-4877 to request one by fax or postal mail. Upon acceptance, the program will send the Lantus® Solostar Pen or U-11 injections to the patient's doctor within two to four business days.[8]

The Diabetes Center for Children at CHOP explains different types of insulin and how the affect blood sugar

About Lantus

Lantus® is used in conjunction with proper diet and exercise to control high blood sugar associated with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It is a man-made, long-acting insulin similar to human insulin.[4] It is the only insulin approved for once-per-day use.[9]

Lantus® replaces the insulin that the body no longer produces, lowering blood sugar. This helps to prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, limb loss and sexual function problems associated with diabetes. Proper control of this condition may lessen the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Lantus® users may experience redness, swollen skin or pain at the point of injection after administration. However, this typically subsides with continued use. Taking too much Lantus® can result in hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. This is a potentially dangerous condition symptomized by sweating, chills, blurred vision and weakness.[4]
