Levitra is the brand name for vardenafil HCl, a phosphodiesterase inhibitor used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, also known as ED or impotence. Levitra is manufactured by the Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and is available by prescription only. While Levitra does not elevate arousal or cause users to want sex, it does allow blood to flow more readily into the penis and enable an erection.
Common adverse reactions to Levitra include blocked or runny nasal passages, headache, flushing, stomach upset, and dizziness. Levitra side effects might also include allergic reactions or interactions with other drugs. Patients with an erection that does not go away after four hours are advised to seek medical treatment in order to avoid serious harm to the penis.[1]

Common Levitra Side Effects
The most common side effects experienced while taking Levitra include:
- back pain
- upset stomach
- heartburn
- runny nose
- flushing of the face, neck or chest.[1]
Severe side effects that may be experienced while taking Levitra include, but are not limited to:
- dizziness
- ringing in the ears
- hoarseness
- loss of hearing
- vision changes or loss of vision

Levitra Allergic Reactions
Some patients taking prescription Levitra may experience allergic reactions that require immediate medical attention. Allergic reactions may be a result of active ingredient vardenafil, or to any of the inactive ingredients that Levitra is made with. Signs of serious reactions may include:
- difficulty breathing
- hives
- rash
- itching
- swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or lips[3]
Warnings and Precautions
- Men whose cardiovascular or general health is not good enough for sexual activity are not right for Levitra.
- Men who take nitrates either regularly or intermittently are not right for Levitra. This warning includes illegal recreational nitrates called "poppers." Mixing nitrates with Levitra can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
- Levitra is not right for men who have uncontrolled high blood pressure.
- In some cases, men taking PDE5 inhibitors, including Levitra, have experienced diminished vision in one or both eyes. Full and permanent blindness has occurred.
- Sudden deafness has occurred among some users of Levitra and similar medications.
- Certain medications, such as erythromycin, ritonavir, indinavir, and ketoconazole, may affect the Levitra dosage prescribed.
- It is dangerous to combine Levitra with other ED medications.
- Patients with liver or kidney problems may be unable to take Levitra.
- Levitra can cause a condition called QT prolongation, characterized by rapid or irregular heartbeat, as well as passing out or severe dizziness. This condition requires prompt medical attention, but is usually not life-threatening.[3]

Levitra increases blood flow to the penis, helping men to achieve and maintain an erection. Because Levitra is not effective for all cases of impotence, and because some men experience side effects from Levitra, doctors may provide patients with free samples of Levitra so that a patient can determine if Levitra works for them. Taking Levitra with high-fat meals can reduce or slow its effectiveness.[3]
