Lidoderm Side Effects

Jump to: navigation, search

Lidoderm is an anesthetic patch that is applied topically and absorbed transdermally, or through the skin, at an area where pain is felt. It is typically prescribed to treat shingles pain, called post-herpetic neuralgia. Lidoderm is a brand name for lidocaine, which is classified as a local anesthetic. Lidoderm is not meant to be applied to skin that is broken or shows signs of blistering.

Side effects of Lidoderm include mild irritation and redness where patch is applied. Those with liver disease and uneven skin may not be able to use Lidoderm, or may need dosage adjustments to fit their conditions.[1]

Common Lidoderm Side Effects

The most common Lidoderm side effects are benign in nature, and occur on or under the skin where the Lidoderm patch has made contact. Patients may experience burning, irritation, redness or swelling in treated areas.[1]

Serious side effects of Lidoderm can include passing out; chilly, sweaty skin; rapid pulse or rapid breathing; excessive thirst; upset stomach or throwing up; and feelings of dizziness or confusion. Such symptoms can be dangerous, and require prompt medical treatment.[1]

Lidoderm Allergic Reactions

The active ingredient in Lidoderm is lidocaine, which causes an allergic reaction in those who are sensitive to it. Patients who are allergic to other, non-lidocaine local anesthetics may also experience reactions to Lidoderm.[1]

Inactive ingredients found in Lidoderm (dihydroxyaluminum aminoacetate, disodium edetate, gelatin, glycerin, kaolin, methylparaben, polyacrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, propylene glycol, propylparaben, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, sodium polyacrylate, D-sorbitol, tartaric acid, and urea) might also cause allergic reactions in rare cases.[4]

Lidoderm Precautions and Warnings

  • Applying Lidoderm to too many areas of skin, or areas that are cut, broken or bruised, may result in an overdose.[2]
  • Lidoderm may interact with medications such as disopyramide (Norpace), tocainide (Tonocard), moricizine (Ethmozine) and procainamide (Procanabid, Pronestyl).[2]
  • Patients who have severe hepatic disease do not metabolize Lidoderm in the normal fashion, and are more likely to develop toxic levels of the drug in the blood.[4]
  • External heated devices, such as electric heating blankets and heating pads, are not recommended for use on areas being treated with Lidoderm. This is because excess heat can cause too much of the medication to be released into the skin.[4]
  • Lidoderm is not meant to be applied to the eyes, and may cause irritation if any physical eye contact is made.[4]
  • Users are advised not to get any Lidoderm on the mucus membranes, such as the nostrils and mouth.[5]
  • Lidoderm patches are not to be used more than once, even though there may still be some lingering medication. After removal, users are to fold the patch together to cover the medicated side and discard in an area where children cannot reach it.[5]
  • Users are instructed to wash their hands thoroughly after handling the Lidoderm patch.
  • Lidoderm can appear in breast milk of nursing mothers, and it is not known how this might affect breastfeeding infants.[5]
  • Lidoderm can be toxic if ingested. If a patient accidentally swallows it, they are urged to contact a poison control center.[5]
